Europe

August 2016

My family went on a two week trip to Iceland and Amsterdam. My friend, also named Katie, conveniently finished up a trip to France around the same time. Katie joined us in Amsterdam and when my family headed home we took off for Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Zagreb, Split, and Milan. My only regret: not making time for Budapest.

Iceland 2016

July 31st – August 3rd, 2016 My family flew from Washington D.C. to Reykjavik, Iceland via Icelandair. We landed in the middle of the night and there was still light out! The sun had technically set but it in the summer it doesn’t go very far past the horizon. The nights are super short during the summer. I […]

Amsterdam 2016

August 3rd-8th, 2016 I adored Amsterdam! It had that classic European charm with the cute houses and the canals but with a more edgy feel. And it was packed with bikes on bikes on bikes. The better part of my time in Amsterdam was spent writing a lab report from my field course in Peru. I […]

Berlin 2016

August 8th-11th, 2016 On our first full day in Berlin we did a free walking tour around the city. Everything about the city and its history is centred around WWII. Practically the entire city had to be rebuilt. When we weren’t learning about WWII we were learning about the years following with the Berlin wall. […]

Prague 2016

August 11th-14th, 2016 Prague was one of my favourite stops of the trip. I’m desperate to go explore more of western Europe after seeing Prague. The architecture was magical and the dessert was amazing. It also helped that the hostel we stayed in was awesome. The basement was set up as a bar and there […]

Vienna 2016

August 14th-16th, 2016 Our stay in Austria was the shortest but I’m so glad we made it there. The city was so grand and breathtaking everywhere we went. The first day we put our things in a locker at the train station and went to check out the city while we waited to check into […]

Croatia 2016

August 16th-21st, 2016 Our first stop in Croatia was Zagreb. Our Airbnb host’s mother was absolutely adorable and got us settled in. We then spent the afternoon out and went to the Mirogoj Cemetery. I’ve never seen tombstones so elaborate and massive. Most were made of marble or granite. I found a pretty large crypt […]

Milan 2016

August 21st-22nd, 2016 Our time in Italy was sadly very brief. We flew over to Milan because I had already bought a round trip ticket through Icelandair and the furthest west they go in Europe is Milan. But lucky for us we got to see a bit of Italy! We stayed in an Airbnb again […]
